Naraasun Dojo

At Penshurst Martial arts is our group and Narassun Dojo is at its core

Naraasun (な らー す ん) comes from the Okinawan language (hogen) and is a traditional teaching mind set that translates to "let you learn"

The teaching philosophy "let you learn" emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and personal growth. The instructors guide the student towards a deeper understanding of the martial art and themselves, encouraging them to push beyond their perceived limits. They believe that each student has a unique potential and that the role of the teacher is to foster this growth by providing a supportive and challenging environment. The philosophy emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and respect, both for one's self and for others. By training hard and developing these skills, the student becomes not only a skilled martial artist, but also a confident and well-rounded individual.

This is at the core of what we strive for at Penshurst Martial Arts, and the Naraasun dojo.

We teach traditional Okinawan forms of Karate (empty hand self-defence) and Kobudo (Okinawan weaponry).

The martial artists of Okinawa regard karate and kobudo as brother and sister different, but inseparable. Should we think of kobudo as an extension of karate, or perhaps karate as an extension of kobudo? Neither, these are complimentary but non-the-less can be learned and practised independently. At Penshurst Martial Arts you may train in either or both, as karate and kobudo classes are conducted separately.

Karate and kobudo training improves physical conditioning, co-ordination, flexibility, focus and concentration. It also builds and reinforces discipline, respect and self-confidence. The first discipline and sign of respect is to regularly attend training.

These are not just a weekly activity, but a way of life. The rigorous training regimen is designed to instil discipline, mental resilience, and physical prowess in its students. Through daily practice and constant self-improvement, the student learns to channel their inner strength and overcome challenges both in and outside the dojo. Karate and kobudo become a framework for personal growth, with lessons that can be applied to all aspects of life. The student learns to respect others, strive for excellence, and develop their character through the practice of martial arts. By integrating the principles of Okinawan karate and kobudo into their life, the student becomes empowered to face life with determination, humility, and purpose, ultimately achieving their full potential as a human being.

Karate training improves:

  • Physical conditioning, co-ordination, flexibility, focus and concentration.
  • It also builds and reinforces discipline, respect and self-confidence.

The first discipline and sign of respect is to regularly attend training.
